World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock makes new home in the Swiss Village of Sugarcreek
WALNUT CREEK -- For many years, the 23.5-foot-tall Swiss clock, known as the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock, drew thousands of tourists to the former Alpine Alpa Restaurant in Wilmot. When the restaurant closed its doors, its assets were sold at public auction, including the cuckoo clock.

HOLMES LIBRARY CONTINUES IT STRUGGLES TO FIND FUNDING
MILLERSBURG -- Budget cuts, a levy failure and necessary reduction of services made 2009 a bad year for the Holmes County District Public Library.
The library receives 96 percent of its funding from the state, according to Director Arlene Radden, noting, "These funds have been declining since 2001."

HOLMES HAS ITS FIRST COVERED BRIDGE, AND IT WAS FREE
WALNUT CREEK -- After three years of planning and construction the first covered bridge in Holmes County was opened Nov. 14, and given the name Stutzman's Crossing.
In 2006, County Engineer Chris Young had the idea of building a covered bridge to replace the bridge on County Road 145 near Walnut Creek.

MILLERSBURG -- ....In another part of the county, the same problems plague Walnut Creek Furniture.
"As far as competing, you just have to kind of restructure and try different things," said manager Galen Swartzentruber. "It's not like it used to be, obviously."
Walnut Creek Furniture has been developing economy lines. The furniture is still high quality, but a little more affordable and less extravagant than some of the company's other lines, Swartzentruber said.

For Fritz Jeanty, January 12 was another ordinary day in his homeland of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He was on his way home to see his wife, Mamie, and his children, Samuel and Benjamin, when the earth shook and his car came to a halt.
